Frequently Asked Questions

When and why do individuals hire coaches?
There is no one right reason to begin working with a coach, but coaches are usually retained when an individual is experiencing or sees the need for a change or wants to improve their current situation or take action on something and are finding they are not moving forward. As a coach, it's my role to open up possibilities and options that my client may not have seen and support them to reach their vision and goals.

When and why do organizations hire coaches?
Again, there is no one right reason to retain a coach, but organizations most frequently retain coaches to assist individuals and teams in achieving and sustaining peak performance. As an organizational coach, my commitment is to help organizations improve their strategic direction, purpose, goals and work/life balance, and provide focus and support to help individuals align and reach organizational and individual goals.

What types of people benefit from personal coaching?

  • People who are considering a career/life transition or want to revitalize their current situation
  • People who want to find or realize a "dream"
  • Anyone experiencing life/work balance issues
  • Anyone wanting to rediscover their purpose, passion and open up possibilities
  • Anyone who is "stuck" and wants to move forward and take action

What types of organizations benefit from business coaching?

  • Small businesses or start-ups interested in growth
  • Managers interested in developing or refining leadership skills
  • Teams interested in pushing beyond their current capabilities
  • Organizations in transition

What does it mean to be a coach?
Coaching is very much a "buzz word" today. Basically there are two types of coaches: performance coaches and what I would call "career resilience" or "life/work balance" coaches. Performance coaches focus primarily on accountability. Their coaching, therefore, becomes a process by which clients are encouraged to build skills and reach goals with the coach serving as the "check point" for the client to use to stay on task.

My approach to individual and corporate coaching is based on my training with the Hudson Institute of Santa Barbara, as well as my study with a variety of other coaching experts, and is grounded in key concepts of adult development and human systems theories, which lead to deep and lasting change. My goal in Personal Coaching is to see the whole person--and thereby assist that individual in moving his or her entire life forward--not just achieve one or more immediate goals. What this means in practice is that I help people tap into their own desire and ability to:

  • get a clear perspective on important life decisions/changes
  • develop action plans that eliminate barriers to success and allow them to move forward with ease
  • find options when they're feeling "stuck"
  • stay focused on where they're headed and take action
  • achieve a more balanced and fulfilling life.

As a business coach I apply many of these same principles to assist executives and teams to gain clarity, discover direction, identify strategies to move forward, effectively manage change or transition, increase team cohesiveness, and provide tools to enable resilience. As with my personal clients, my goal in Corporate Consulting and Coaching is to see the organizational unit as a whole, and then to weave together the variety of team concerns into an integrated plan that has vitality and purpose. In this way, I serve as a change agent for both individuals and teams--encouraging them to move forward--and not just concentrate on achieving isolated objectives.

What type of results should a person expect from the coaching relationship?
In general, my goal both with personal and business coaching is to assist clients in breaking old patterns, finding core values, defining purpose, opening up possibilities and then living life in accordance with the values and purposes that have been identified. Success is achieved as individuals and organizations create visionary futures and discover new ways to design and sustain these dreams.

As a result of my coaching, both individuals and teams should expect to move:

  • from a place of dissatisfaction to satisfaction
  • from confusion to clarity
  • from stuck to unstuck

How long does this process take?
Coaching happens over time. It's not a quick fix! While each individual and each organizational situation is different, the following is a typical timeline.

  • I begin by providing an initial coaching session where we discuss the client's background and history, set preliminary coaching goals, discuss the coaching process, determine which coaching arrangement and timeline would work best.

  • Initially I meet regularly with my clients twice a month. This can be a combination of face-to-face, phone and email, as determined by myself and the client. Most coaching relationships last a minimum of three months and can extend up to two years.
